One of the most important and challenging issues throughout the history of Qur'anic interpretation and sciences is that of abrogation. Early scholars have considered many verses of the Qur'an that have an aspect of designation and restriction to be within the scope of abrogation. Later scholars have had a special approach to this issue with a new definition. Although the discussion of the abrogating and the abrogated is still considered as one of the fundamental issues of Qur'anic sciences, not much research has been done to explain and examine the differences and similarities between the views of early and later scholars on the issue of abrogation in the Holy Qur'an. Therefore, the present study is intended to use a descriptive-analytical and comparative method to conduct a comparative study of the views of Sheikh Ṭūsī, one of the early scholars, in Tafsīr al-Tibyān fī Tafsīr al-Qur'an and Kitāb al-‘Iddah fī Uṣūl al-Fiqh, and Ayatollah Khū’ī, one of the later jurists, in Kitāb al-Bayān fī Tafsīr al-Qur'an. The findings of this study show that Sheikh Ṭūsī and Ayatollah Khū’ī differ in their views on the types of abrogation and its instances in the verses of the Holy Qur'an, and that Ayatollah Khū’ī, unlike Sheikh Ṭūsī, believes in the abrogation of only one verse of the Holy Qur'an.
