The belief in implying multiple meanings from the words of the Qur'an, which is interpreted as the permission to intend multiple meanings from a single word, has long been of interest to writers and legal theoreticians (uṣūlīs), and is one of the discourses of the principles of jurisprudence studies. Rāghib Iṣfahānī is one of the first interpreters who has discussed it as one of the principles and rules of interpretation and spoke about its fundamentals, conditions, types and reasons. The present article, with a descriptive-analytical method, is intended to explain Rāghib Iṣfahānī's point of view regarding this issue in the Qur'an. The achievement of this research is that, according to Rāghib, the existence of multiple meanings - not examples -, the relation between various meanings, inner meanings (longitudinal), and the special characteristics of the speaker and the audience, are among the principles of the permissibility of implying multiple meanings from a single word; and the lack of conflict between the meanings and the existence of a comprehensive meaning among multiple meanings are among its conditions. Also, the multiple denotations of the words of the Qur'an in the field of single, dual, and plural words, word structure, phrase and sentence, in negative and positive contexts, and in external and internal meanings, are among its variations. In order to prove this issue, Rāghib has referred as evidence to the support of linguistic evidence, verses of the Qur'an and narrations about the inner aspect of the Qur'an.
