This article seeks to state the significance of multiplicity and difference in the readings of the Qur'an. The writer, first, describes such terms as reading (qarā’at), science of reading, validity of reading, and talks about the importance of the knowledge of reading. Then, discusses the history of readings and explains the secret of difference in readings, and goes on to explain the relation between the Qur'an and the readings and touches upon the rules for the validity of readings. The writer talks, in this section, of various viewpoints concerning the validity of readings and brings up their reasons. In another section of this article, the writer deals with the features of the ideal reading and a summation of the relevant discussions.
