Abstract

This article examines the standards of the translation of the Qur'an. At first, the writer gives a definition of the standards of translation and then divides these standards into two groups: 1. Standards effective in the validity of translation such as existence of special qualifications in the translator, refraining from imposing one's opinion, and complying with fundamentals and principles. 2. Standards effective in a perfect translation. In this respect, the writer names the following factors: soundness of translation; faithfulness in translation; separation of the text from the comments; observance of punctuation marks; brevity in translation; orderliness in translation; attention to the indication of the verse; selection of the closest equivalent; transfer of emotional weight and expression style; attention to the relation between parts of the text; not translating the ambiguous verses and detached letters; printing of the Qur'an text along the translation; comments at footnote.
