Abstract

This essay examines various translations of the Qur'an. At first, the writer introduces different viewpoints concerning methodology of translation. Then, he makes a critical review of them and recounts the shortcomings of the categorization of their methods. After that, he proceeds to present a new categorization as follows: 1. verbatim or word for word translation, 2. literal translation, 3. faithful or trustworthy translation, 4. semantic translation, 5. free translation, 6. exegetical translation.
The writer further explains each of the methods and their differences with one another and in conclusion goes on to make judgments on and select the desirable method from among the brought up discourses.
