Abstract

The science of aspects and homologues (wujūh wa naẓā’ir) or the polysemy of Qur’anic terms is among various Qur’anic sciences which has been of especial interest to the interpreters and scholars of Qur’anic studies since early centuries of the rise of Islam, of which many works have been left behind. These writings have sometimes appeared either as part of exegeses and books of Qur’anic sciences, or independent works. The relevance and impact of this science in modern linguistics adds up to its importance, no less than to its great role in understanding and interpreting of the Qur’an. After defining and explaining this science, the present article reviews the historical development of written works in this field and categorizes and lists the most important compiled sources.
