In this article the issue of the Prophet’s (S.A.W.) inability to write and read is studied from an intra-Qur’ānic perspective and three major theories are set forth. One of them is the famous theory stating that the Prophet was absolutely unable to read and write. The second theory is that of the orientalists who absolutely believe that the Prophet (S.A.W.) was able to read and write. The third theory is the selected one, which by criticizing the first two viewpoints proves that the Prophet (S.A.W.) had been unable to read and write prior to his Divine Mission; but after his Mission, he became familiar with reading and writing.
