Using context (siyāq) has been a rational practice and its validity is in terms of the validity of appearance (ẓuhūr), which the interpreters have extensively made use of in various forms to understand Divine Words.
This article tries to explain the evidentiality of context in understanding Divine Words from the viewpoint of ‘Allāma Muḥammad Ḥusayn Faḍl Allāh. In his view, context can be divided into four categories: context of word, context of āya, context of sūra, and Qur’ānic context. Each one of these types have many uses in Tafsīr Min Waḥy al-Qur’ān, among which are: obtaining the meaning of the words; finding out God’s intention of the verses; reviewing and criticizing the interpreters’ statements; evaluation of the narrations; and its use in literary discourses.
