Abstract

The author of Tafsīr fī Ẓalāl finds a relation among the āyas of the Qur'an and expresses this relation with such titles as topic, purpose, ambience, pivot, and character.
One of the factors of relation among the āyas is the topic of the sūra. Sayyid Quṭb believes in the topic-orientedness of the sūras of the Qur'an and throughout his tafsīr introduces some sūras as single-topic and some as multi-topics.
Another factor of relation among the sūra is the purpose of the sūra. The author of Tafsīr fī Ẓalāl approves the purposefulness of the sūras of the Qur'an and regards many of the sūras as single-purpose and some others as multi-purpose.
The ambience of the sūra is another factor of relation among the āyas. Sayyid Quṭb views every sūra as consisting of an ambience and considers this ambience as dominating the entire āyas of a sūra.
The pivot and character of the ṣūra are introduced as other factors of the relation among āyas.
According to Sayyid Quṭb, topic-orientedness, purposefulness, ambience, pivot, and character of the sūra are not subject to the instantaneous Revelation; rather, in case of the gradual Revelation of the sūra the above-mentioned discourses also deserve to be discussed and examined.
The name of the sūra and its being Meccan or Medinan are among the important signs in the topicology of the sūra. Sayyid Quṭb introduces the cognition of Meccan and Medinan āyas and the inimitability of the Qur'an as the main advantages of the bond among āyas.
Shawṭ (round), jawla (turn), maqṭa‘ (section), mawj (wave), dars (scrutiny), and shaṭr (part) are among the titles that Sayyid Quṭb has used to categorize the āyas of the Qur'anic sūras.
