Abstract

Many are the Qur'anic words which have specific meanings in the structure of Divine Revelation and their meaning are not accessible except through deep thinking and deliberation on the language of the Qur'an. Tawīl (esoteric interpretation), which is repeated in the Qur'an seven times, is among the words which, in combination of the other Qur'anic words or phrases, impart various meanings. There is not much disagreement among interpreters in regard to many of those meanings. What so far sounds ambiguous in tafsīrs of the Qur'an is the concept of this word in verse 37 of Sūrat al-Yūsif, which the existing translations have opted to mean it as "interpretation of dream", transforming the message of the verse.
With a critical approach to the existing translations and tafsīrs, the present article seeks to figure out the best and closest meaning that is implied from this Revealed word.
