Thematic Unity of the Sūras in Tafsīrs of Al-Manār and Al-Mīzān

Abstract

This article discusses the thematic unity of the Qur'an from the viewpoints of ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī and Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā in Al-Mīzān and Al-Manār. It starts with three questions concerning the interrelation of the āyas and sūras of the Qur'an, a quick touch on the historical background of the viewpoints of the interpreters and Qur'an scholars on thematic unity, and the definition of the sūras of the Qur'an. The pivotal discourses and main features of this research include: the six layers of thematic unity in the Qur'an from the viewpoint of Al-Manār and Al-Mīzān; the style of Al-Mīzān and Al-Manār in unveiling themes of sūras; fields of difference between Al-Mīzān and Al-Manār in unveiling themes; structuring the material; conceptual connectedness of the sequential sūras; and enumeration of the drawbacks in the conception of the thematic unity of the sūras from the viewpoints of ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī and Rashīd Riḍā.
