With reference to a part of verse 48 of sūrat al-Mā’ida, "For each [community] among you We had appointed a code [of law] and a path…" which has spoken of Divine Will regarding the plurality of religions, pluralists try to introduce this verse as one of their evidences to their Qur'anic view.
Upon deliberating on the procedure in which the pluralists have argued about how the claimers have alluded to this verse, and after examining the interpreters' viewpoints concerning the meaning and significance of the verse in question, the writer has eventually concluded that in order to answer the question "whether the above verse can confirm the pluralists' view or not", special attention must be paid to the relation created between "plurality of religious laws" and "Divine test" (ibtilā’) on which the latter part of the verse has asserted: "… and had Allah wished He would have made you one community, but [His purpose required] that He should test you in respect to what He has given you."
In fact, a relation has been made between these two concepts, i.e., plurality of religious laws and Divine test, the elucidation and clear explanation of which, as intended, may contribute to a reasonable and defendable remark concerning the verse's allusion or non-allusion to the pluralists' theory.
