Abstract

This paper takes a comparative glance at the semantics of "faith" (īmān) from the viewpoints of Fakhr al-Rāzī and ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī. In view of Fakhr al-Rāzī, faith is the confirmation of heart, and action and confession are not all or part of faith. According to the author of "Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb", defining "faith" as ma‘rifat (divine knowledge) is not appropriate; for what is meant by this ma‘rifat is confirmation by logic rather than by heart. ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī, in contrast to Fakhr al-Rāzī, regards "faith" as confirmation, and what he means by confirmation is belief and science, which is technically called as logical confirmation. Besides this, from ‘Allāma Ṭabāṭabā’ī's point of view it is necessary to include "commitment in deeds" in a definition of "faith"; and this necessity is suggested in certain verses of the Qur'an. However, action or deed is not the very faith or its reality; rather, it is known as the outcome of faith.
