Abstract

Every Qur'anic word has a special meaning and function, and every word is used with great accuracy. Therefore, it is possible that a word may cause us to make mistakes in the explanation and interpretation of the words of Revelation due to its multiple uses and the closeness of the lexical and idiomatic meaning. The word yunfiqūn is one of these words that some commentators, based on verse 67 of Sūrat al-Furqān and the content of verse 29 of Sūrat al-Isrā, have attached to the idea of "respecting moderation in spending (infāq)" and explained the limits of spending in the way of God; whereas there are many verses in contradiction, contrast and critique of this idea. In order to discover semantic differences, dictionaries were a suitable reference and then, examining the perspective of commentators in other verses that are in contrast to the idea of moderation. Thereafter, the meaning of each word in each verse, as it really is, was obtained. Accordingly, in the present study, the "idea of moderation" was criticized by examining the word na-fa-qa and the verses that confirm "the lack of moderation in spending". According to this critique, those verses that have been interpreted as meaning "moderation in spending" actually mean moderation in "spending" and "expenditure" in life, not in the sense of spending in the way of God; because the meaning of the word moderation in infāq in the way of Allah, like moderation in obeying the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.), is incorrect and insufficient.
