Understanding Islamic civilization and organizing a Qur’an-based body of knowledge regarding civilization—much like any other science—requires a civilizational reading of the Qur’an. In this reading, all epistemic contributions related to the goal of formulating a "theory of civilization" are subjected to data collection, analysis, explanation, and synthesis; however, significant theoretical and methodological challenges lie ahead. Overcoming these challenges is a prerequisite for producing Qur’an-based knowledge concerning civilization. Given that the scientific challenges are numerous and it is impossible to address them all, this article examines ten critical theoretical and methodological challenges facing the civilizational reading of the Qur’an: 1. The scientific lineage of the civilizational reading of the Qur’an; 2. The foundational basis for the existence of human sciences in the Qur’an; 3. Civilization (tamaddun) vs. Civilizational (tamaddunī); 4. First-order vs. second-order knowledge of civilization; 5. The ontological/status-based authority (marja‘iyyat-i sha’nī) of the Holy Qur’an for all sciences; 6. Methodologies for data collection despite the absence of the specific terms tamaddun and ḥaḍārah in the Qur’an; 7. The Qur’an as a source for the theory of civilization; 8. Securing the necessary implications through implicative/connotative meanings (dalālat-i iltizāmī); 9. The most appropriate interpretive approach; and 10. Managing vast amounts of data. The novelty of this article lies in deriving these issues through the objective process of the civilizational reading of the Qur’an. Resolving each challenge serves as a step toward constructing the foundations of the civilizational reading of the Qur’an. Furthermore, this article elucidates the concept of the "ontological/status-based authority of the Holy Qur’an for the sciences" for the first time.
