One of the modern methods of interpreting the Holy Qur’an that has emerged in recent decades is civilizational interpretation (tafsīr-i tamaddunī). Like other interpretive methods, civilizational interpretation possesses its own unique methodology and, consequently, its own specific approach. Methodology is inherently concerned with the question of how valid and sustainable knowledge can be produced. The purpose of this article is to elucidate the methodology of civilizational interpretation; in this regard, its primary objective is to investigate the nature of the methodology of civilizational interpretation. To answer the research question, a macro analytical-comparative method has been employed. The results indicate that civilizational interpretation encompasses all verses of the Holy Qur’an. Understanding the objectives (maqāṣid) of the Holy Qur’an is the most critical criterion for correct civilizational understanding. The civilizational interpreter (mufassir-i tamaddunī) constitutes the most fundamental pillar in this process. Furthermore, civilizational understanding is closely linked to fuzzy understanding, and the validity of civilizational interpretation is derived from the synthesis of the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, and reason (‘aql).
