Literary interpretation of the Qur’an is an interpretation based on literary sciences, which in modern times was turned into a school by Amīn al-Khūlī. This school has made “vocabulary analysis” one of its pillars, because discovering the correct meaning of the Qur’anic terms is the first step to understanding it. The present study, using a descriptive-analytical method, examines vocabulary analysis in contemporary and past literary interpretations. The conclusion is that the contemporary school has founded vocabulary analysis on the basis of “semantic transformation of vocabulary” and “conformity of the language of the Qur’an with the Arabic language” and has accordingly made the discovery of the exact meaning of the word conditional upon the discovery of its revelation time meaning, and has considered the discovery of this meaning dependent upon the components of “distinguishing the Arabicized terms (mu‘arrab) from Arabic”, “relying on the sensory meaning”, and “taking advantage of Arabic taste”. From the point of view of this school, after discovering the revelation time meaning, one should explore the uses of the word in the Qur’an in order to obtain its Qur’anic meaning, and in the final step – relying on non-synonymity as a basis – a special meaning should be expressed. The comparative study of these components shows that most of them have been used in ancient literary interpretations and their difference with the contemporary school is in terms of “non-adherence to components”, “lack of connection between components” and “less profundity of analysis” in past interpretations.
