One of the difficulties that Muslim scholars face in understanding the verses of the Holy Qur’an is determining the antecedents that have been used in various verses. Verse 124 of Sūrat Al-Naḥl is among the verses that are related to the “Companions of the Sabbath” and the pronoun “hā’” in the phrase ﴾ikhtalifu fih﴿ (differed about it) refers to their differences. However, disagreements about the reference (antecedent) of this pronoun have led to differences in interpretations.
The present article uses descriptive-analytical methods to review and analyze widely-known and little-known views in this field. While rejecting the widely-known view, the authors believe that although, like the little-known view, the reference to this pronoun (millata Ibrāhīm = nation of Abraham) is in the previous verse, but contrary to the argument of the maintainer of this view, the verse in question complements other verses related to the story of the Sabbath companions and it is understood from it that the ruling on tightening the fishing ban on Saturday was due to their differences between the monotheistic and Abrahamic religion of Moses (A.S.).
