Muhammad Hadi Ma’refat (1309-1385 Sh./1930-2006 CE) is one of the contemporary and prominent Shi’ite Qur’anic scholars who is especially known for writing the valuable book Al-Tamhīd in the field of Qur’anic sciences and presenting innovative theories. Based on the three main sources he uses, namely the Qur’an, hadith writings, and historical proofs, he intends to resolve the intricacies in the Qur’anic concepts with the aid of the verses. The late Ma’refat, considering his scholarly records in this field, tries to provide innovative and well-reasoned suggestions in various examples of Qur’anic sciences. In this article, we would focus on formulating the theories of Qur’anic sciences of Ayatollah Ma’refat and, in particular, on the historical, theological, and epochal-social dimensions intended by him, and try to show that such approaches of “heritage preservation”, “innovative”, “study of misconception and responsiveness” and “Unitarianism” have played a significant role in his Qur’anic studies and opinions. By examining the contexts of the formation of the Qur’anic views of the late Ma’refat from the environment, school, resources, and the atmosphere governing the society, the present article concludes that different approaches have been adopted by the late Ma’refat proportionate to his impressionability from the above-mentioned contexts and his influencing the prevailing epochal course of events.
