The relation between Islam and democracy from the viewpoint of the Qur’an is the subject reviewed in this article. The writer states five reasons from the proponents (verses denying reluctance in religion, importance of rationality and reasoning, finality of prophethood, allegiance, and consultation) and five reasons from the opponents (rightfulness of Islam, battle with the polytheists, killing of the heretics, infidels as unclean to touch-najis-, and inequality of rights in Islam). He also points out weak points of each one and then criticizes the outlook which regards democracy as out-religious. In the end, he deals with the inner challenges of democracy.
